It's futsal time again TWO current world champions of football will square off in Singapore come December.
France, the game's holder of the World Cup, will play in the Tiger 5s alongside futsal world champion Brazil at the Singapore Indoor Stadium from Dec 1-5.
In what is billed as the richest five-a-side indoor competition on earth, the US$150,000 (S$255,000).
Tiger 5s will also see the return of defending champion Spain, which is ranked second to Brazil in world futsal.
Other top European nations vying for the US$80,000 top prize money are Italy and Holland,
while Asia will be represented by South Korea, Malaysia and the host (Singapore). The United States, hoping to add on to its win in the women's World Cup, will make its debut in the tournament.
But Brazil, which lost 3-4 to Spain through a golden goal in 1997, will start as the favourite. The three-time world champion boasts some of the best professionals in the business.
The competition is expected to rival the game's World Cup.
Said Asian Football Confederation general secretary Peter Velappan yesterday: "The 1997 Tiger 5s was truly a world-class spectacle and I'm already looking forward to this year's event.  "This tournament will no doubt be the benchmark for all futsal tournaments around the world."
Added Aecio de Borba Vasconcelos, president of Brazil Futsal Federation: "We returned to Brazil in 1997 very impressed with what small Singapore could do.  "We're happy to be invited again and are looking forward to playing in the competition."
Singapore is also set to better itself as host.  Global television coverage reached 156 hours in
1997 and broadcast statistics are set to soar again. ESPN Star Sports network will be televising all the matches live to more than 45 million viewers across the continent.   Richard Young, vice-president, operations, ESPN Star Sports Event Management Group, said: "Star
Sports will broadcast every goal, pass and tackle of every match of the Tiger 5s to 45 million homes in 25 countries throughout Asia.  "Our unprecedented coverage will include star player interviews, behind the scenes coverage as well as a multitude of cameras in the Singapore Indoor Stadium."
Host Singapore, which is a relative newcomer to the sport, is banking on the competition to
generate interest in its ambitious Goal 2010 project.
The Republic is hoping to qualify for the World Cup finals of the 11-a-side game and hopes to unearth some talent from its five-a-side version.
School teacher John Chia has been appointed coach with the players to be selected from trials to be held soon.
