City South WestResident’s report ‘not democratic’18 Dec 08by
Belinda SeeneyLORD Mayor Campbell Newman has called for neighbours to “just get on” after a dispute between Moorooka Sports and Community Club and nearby residents.
Some neighbours want a public forum to democratically decide the future of indoor soccer, and other sports in the area.
Brisbane City Council owns the Koala Rd property and informed the club last month that futsal would be shut down as of next year after a formal noise complaint from a resident.
Cr Newman last week said he would be “strongly influenced” by Moorooka ward councillor Steve Griffith’s recommendation on the fate of futsal at the club.
“I would love appropriate sport and recreation activities to occur at the club,” Cr Newman said. “But I don’t want people in quiet, leafy streets to be subjected to impacts that weren’t contemplated when the bowls club was constructed.”
But Cr Griffiths said he was in a worse position than Cr Newman to make a recommendation as he had been given access to only part of a report detailing the complaint.
Cr Griffiths said the report spoke of residents being “up in arms,” but homeowners next to the club had told him they did not have an issue with noise.
One resident, who asked not to be identified, said the complaints stemmed from one person and did not reflect the majority of the neighbourhood.
“We can’t let one person have the say for the entire community it’s not democratic,” the resident said.
“We really want a public forum on it.”
She said she had contacted the futsal club and Brisbane City Council in a bid to generate more public debate and input into the controversial ban.
