Play futsal like Ronaldo

Thursday, 15 January 2009

A FORM of football fairly new to England but which has helped develop the skills of the likes of Ronaldo and Ronaldinho was tried out by U12 girl players on Saturday.

Maryport’s Netherhall Sports Centre was the venue for a futsal festival with players from the recently formed West Cumbria Youth League U12 girls league and organised by Cumberland FA.

Girls from charter standard clubs Workington Juniors, Seaton, Bransty Rangers and Windscale quickly picked up the basics of Futsal and the differences from the conventional five-a-side game.

The name futsal derives from the fut for football and sala, the Spanish for hall. It is a five-a-side game, played with hockey-sized goals and a smaller ball with a reduced bounce.

Players are constantly placed in situations where they must receive or play while under pressure or in confined spaces and it places considerable demand on technique, movement, tactical awareness and fitness.

The girls will get another opportunity to try futsal with another festival arranged for January 31.

It is hoped that next season will see the West Cumbria Youth League run U12 and U14 divisions for girls, with the Cumberland FA working closely with the league and clubs.
