Meeting the demand for futsal refs

KUALA LUMPUR: With the growth of futsal as a viable sport around the world, the role of specialist five-a-side referees is becoming more important.

The AFC Elite Futsal Referees Seminar, which kicked off here on Tuesday, is designed to bring out the best in Asian futsal referees, according to AFC Referees Director Yoshimi Ogawa.

“Futsal is definitely growing rapidly and more professional futsal leagues are sprouting around the world, including Asia,” he said.

“Because of this, there is a growing demand of quality futsal referees and this is what we hope to achieve with this seminar.”

Although the major laws are the same, futsal refereeing is entirely different and requires a whole new set of skills.

There are 18 futsal referees in this course, which lasts for three days.
