FAM Wants Futsal At Sukma 2010

January 19, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 (Bernama) -- The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) will send a letter to the Malaysian Sports Council (MSC) to appeal on the latter's decision in dropping futsal from the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2010 to be held in Melaka.

FAM Futsal and Beach Football Committee chairman Hamidin Mohd Amin said FAM regretted the decision by MSC as it would hamper development of new futsal talents in the country.

"FAM has long regarded SUKMA as an arena for it to scout for young talents to be absorbed into the national futsal squad," he told Bernama here Monday.

Hamidin said the national futsal squad had proven its capability when the team won a silver medal at the Sea Games in Korat in 2007.

"It is a loss if futsal is not included in SUKMA considering that the game is becoming popular among youths," he added.

Prior to this, FAM had appealed to MSC to include futsal, but was rejected on several grounds, including the current economic situation and lack of infrastructure facilities.

A total of 25 types of sports have been listed for SUKMA 2010, from 31 when the 12th series was held in Terengganu last year.

They are aquatic (swimming/diving), weight lifting, cycling, badminton, football, gymnastic, hockey, lawn bowling, archery, shooting, track event, tenpin bowling, sailing, silat, sepak takraw, wushu, karate, squash, netball, basketball, equestrian, boxing, ping-pong, silambam and petanque.
