Leinster LeaderSecond women's soccer forum a great success27 January 2009By
RUTH O'BRIEN The FAI held their second womens/girls' forum in the Keadeen Hotel in Newbridge on Thursday last in order to put together an action plan from the issues raised at the previous forum in December.
Those in attendance from the FAI were the Kildare Development officers, Laura Cusack and Pat Behan, Women's Development officer for South Leinster, Emma Martin and Women's Unit manager/ U19 Women's Irish manager, Sue Ronan. The chairperson of the WFAI, Niamh O'Donoghue addressed the forum with advice on how best to develop the girl's game in the area, speaking from her years of experience.
The immediate plan of action is to hold a blitz day for girls aged 7-16 years on Sunday, 1 March from 10:30am until 1.30pm in an indoor venue that is central in the county. The venue is to be confirmed. All clubs in Kildare are invited to bring teams and any girls who aren't involved in a team are welcome to attend on the day. It is hoped that there will be a good turn-out for the blitz day and that there will be enough interest to get a regular girl's league started in the coming months.
It was suggested that more Futsal competitions could be held in schools following on from the great success of the secondary schools' first year girl's Futsal blitz day with a total of 96 girls in attendance.
Ard Scoil na Tríonede were the winners who went on to represent Kildare in the Leinster finals, which took place last week, finishing runners up in their group.
The possibility of running a women's Futsal league was also raised and while the FAI can organise various events and offer help and advice, the support of the clubs and volunteers will be needed for this to be a success. There was good news announced on the night as Kildare Sports Partnership have secured funding for women to attend coaching courses to qualify as FAI approved coaches. Any women in Kildare who would be interested in availing of this funding are advised to contact either of the FAI Development officers for Kildare, Laura Cusack or Pat Behan. If you are interested in attending the blitz day or have an interest in any of the other issues raised at the forum, please contact Laura on 0867949406/ laura.cusack@fai.ie or Pat on 087-9956387/ pat.behan@fai.ie.
