Ben PerrinSwindon’s latest centre of excellence – a new Futsal arena – has attracted massive interest from across the country.
And the town’s youngsters have now had a chance to play in the new centre at the Techno Trading Estate.
Futsal is the format for indoor five-a-side Small Sided Football, which is recognised by FIFA, UEFA and more recently the Football Association.
It is reported to be the world’s fastest growing indoor sport with more than 30 million players worldwide.
In Swindon there is a full-size and training pitch with hi-tech flooring, electronic scoreboard and live video.
There is also a cafe and bar and an interactive learning and conference centre.
Managing director Frank Rodriguez said: “Futsal is a lifestyle experience catering for multi gender and age groups. Customers can expect a state-of-the-art arena with modern facilities.
“The facilities will be used free of charge by local schools and colleges during weekends. It will also offer an interactive learning centre for players, coaches, teams and Futsal development in general.”
The arenas will provide the ability to host national and international Futsal competitions.
Edmont was appointed to build the area by the Futsal company, which aims to provide a national network of arenas. Plans are advanced to develop the next two sites elsewhere across the UK.
Craig Morton, the deputy managing director at Edmont in Hyde Road, said: “This was a fantastic project for our team. The entire scheme took us just 12 weeks to complete, from taking over the empty warehouse on Bramble Road at Techno Trading Estate to designing, building and fitting out the arena, cafe area, changing rooms and public areas.
“I can see the sport taking off quickly once the UK has several dedicated arenas.”
The Futsal name comes from a blend of Spanish and Portuguese words which translate as ‘indoor football’.
