Youngsters bid for Futsal success

THE Fingal area finals of a nationwide Futsal competition will take place at the end of this month.
The first qualifying round was held last November at Corduff Sports Centre with 10 mixed teams participating.
The competition qualifiers were organised by the FAI in conjunction with Fingal County Council’s Sports Unit, Sporting Fingal FC and Blanchardstown Drugs Task Force.
Both boys and girls from third and fourth class at Scoil Mhuire, Blakestown, St Ciaran’s, Hartstown, St Patrick’s, Corduff and St Philip’s, Mountview participated together on the day.
Martin Doyle, FAI/Fingal County Council football development officer, worked extensively with Blanchardstown Drugs Task Force to incorporate the Drugs Task Force Awareness Week into the competition and was delighted with the success of the tournament.
“This tournament highlighted the tremendous benefits of playing Futsal (the UEFA and FIFA recognised version of 5-a-side football),” said Mr Doyle.
“Futsal is all about developing skill and technique. “From the quality performances and individual skill on show, it is clear that Futsal has a very important part to play in developing Irish football.”
Sporting Fingal star Conan Byrne attended to cast his eye over proceedings.
He spoke to the kids about what it takes to become a professional footballer, the benefits of a healthy diet and the dangers of alcohol.
The final saw St Ciaran’s play against St Patrick’s with the latter coming out victors, but both teams progress to the Fingal area finals.
The organisers would like to thank all the teachers and participants for making the day a great success, and also to FAI/Fingal County Council football development officers Martin Doyle, Paul O’Reilly and Denis Hyland for coordinating the event.
