VIKINGS + PCYC = BIG WIN FOR NSW FUTSAL
Riding high on the success of their first ever National Titles, the rise & rise of Vikings Futsal continues. PCYC NSW has joined forces with Vikings, forging an alliance that will ensure the growth of Futsal across the state.

The partnership gives Vikings access to an additional 60 centres. The alliance casts a net, ranging from Coolangatta in the north, south to Albury and as far west as Broken Hill.

After a number of meetings, the deal was finalised late last week between PCYC NSW CEO Chris Gardiner, NSW Vikings CEO Bob Raso and National Vikings CEO Alistair Miller. The contract allows Vikings to develop and manage the sport throughout the vast PCYC network of NSW.

The opportunities are now endless for Vikings with a potential of up to 24, 000 additional players. It also gives all current PCYC players the opportunity to be eligible for all Vikings events which include all State & National Titles and overseas tours.

The partnership is a massive show of support for Vikings and the direction they are taking Futsal, not only in Australasia but all across the globe. It allows the organisation to remain at the forefront of the sports development at all levels.

The program will start almost immediately with audits being conducted on all PCYC sites as early as this week. With a view to commence the roll out by the end of February.

Giant Killers from the West, Fall at The Final Hurdle
The inaugural Vikings National Futsal Titles produced many surprising results & triumphs over the four days, but none larger then the success of the West Australian Open Men's side.

After causing the upset of the tournament in their semi final by beating the star studded NSW outfit 11-2, the boys from the west eyed of Queensland in the final. Queensland made their way through via a 3-1 victory over Victoria.

Most pundits whom had watched the 4 day event, had picked a NSW v QLD showdown. But primarily due to wear & tear from a massive campaign, the NSW side was well & truly out of contention at half time of the semi, trailing the Sandgroppers 7-1.

So heading into the final, all the question marks where over the Perth based outfit & whether or not they could continue their giant killing performance in the main event.

Throughout the contest WA went toe to toe with the heavy favourites form the north creating equal amounts of opportunities. But in the end, it was the maroons who put an end to the fairytale, come out victors with a 7-4 win.

The Open women's final was an epic end to end struggle. Featuring the old rivals NSW and QLD the game needed extra time to decide the winner.

In a battle that staged the experience of the QLD side against the youth of the NSW girls, the result has hanging in the balance throughout. Finally a penalty in the dyeing stages of the first half of extra time was awarded to QLD. They made no mistakes with the opportunity presented to them slotting the strike with pin point accuracy. Giving QLD a 3-2 result.

Both games where witnessed by a very large crowd of supporters made up of mostly younger squad members, who's tournaments finished at the alternative venues the previous day.

Photos of the event will be posted throughout the week on the Vikings website.

Northern NSW Boys Take on the World
8 talented Northern Rivers players Vikings have just returned victorious after ploughing through the pre Christmas Brisbane Cup undefeated. The 16 squad competed against the best club teams from Southern & Western Queensland & Northern NSW.

The boys are Jesse McDonnell and Jayden Allen of Lennox Head, Corey Montgomery and Dan Musgrave of Ocean Shores, Craig Barnham of Crabbes Creek, Tim Knight of Federal, Sean Spencer of Alstonville and Layton Barton of Bangalow.

The Brisbane Cup was a gruelling day for the lads as they played 6 tough games over 9 hours.

Their final game pitched the southerners against a Gold Coast based outfit. In a thrilling contest the two sides went goal for goal throughout . With 20 seconds on the clock and the score level at 4-4 victory was claimed with lightning like strike from Lennox Heads Jesse McDonnell.

Just a few weeks early the same squad headed further north to participate in the Queensland Country Titles. Held at Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, the boys called on all their skill & fitness to once again bring home the bacon comprohensivley beating the boys from Bundaberg in the final.

Although only 15, when in their local comp, the e-LEMON-8erz as they are known , hone their skills in the open mens competition. Federal's Tim Knight has been heading the charge and on the back of solid performances at Vikings National Schools Tournament last year, was rewarded with selection in the Australian Under 16 school side to tour Brazil. Knight, along with Layton Barton from Bangalow & Sean Spencer of Alstonville also gained selection via Vikings 'South Pacific Challenge', to represent Australia on a Tour of Britain.

With the future of Northern Rivers Futsal is looking very bright in the hands of these boys. Vikings can see their potential and are hoping to fast track the skills of the group. Three of of them have been given the chance to to train with the Men's NSW National League squad where they'll have access to specialised training from both Australian and Brazilian coaches. Jesse Layton & Tim

With another massive watershed year for all Vikings Offices across Australasia now over with & the conclusion of our inaugural National Titles, Victoria can now reflect on 2008 and look forward to an exciting 2009.

The Vis Vipers Senior and Youth teams rounded off the year with a bag of trophies & honours. These included

The Brisbane National League Women's Title

Equal first place for the Men in the same tournament

Winners of the Men's International Vikings Cup in New Zealand

Both National School & State Youth Titles for the Boys & Runners up at both events for the girls

As well as National Club Champions at the Recent Sydney, National Titles

Considering that the core of these squads are graduates or long term members of the Dal Ponte Victorian Futsal Academy, it is pleasing to note that we are definitely on the right track with our junior development. In Turn the Academy is going 'great guns'& it's reputation & popularity looks to grow in 2009, with record enrolments projected.

Victoria has been proud to host the last two National School Championship sand even though we are sad to see it moving on we are ecstatic to travel further south to Adelaide for 2009.

The success of the Nationals in Sydney has reverberated around all facets of the Australian Futsal corridors and our players and coaches who attend this year are very keen to do so again in 2010.

With the inception of the international calendar for Australian Vikings representative teams to participate in the AMF World Cups and Championships our players are looking forward contributing to the phenomenal initiative. The Senior Men , Women and under 21 teams sojourn into the this new territory is ground breaking to say the least. Other opportunities for our players will see us challenge for the National League in Brisbane at Easter, The Vikings International Cup , in NZ & the AMF World Club Cup.

The opportunity to continue to telecast and promote our very own state “Supa Liga” is starting to gain a solid reputation and following in its own right.

Via our Junior members 2008 saw us host and service over 3000 teams and approximately 2000 players participated in our Junior Futsal Camps last summer. Our small sided football/futsal programmes covered over 500 sub-junior 5-8 year old first time players.

Our new football initiatives and ties with Brazil and Atletico Mineiro included 2 tours with over 32 players experiencing a once in a lifetime journey to the home of Futsal.

2009 will offer a luck group of combined 15 & 15 year olds to play in the Costa Durada Futsal Tournament in Barcelona as well as visit Liverpool and the Everton Academias in the UK.

There is still plenty to do, and everyone 'south of the border' will be doing their best to keep espousing the value of our great sport and of course how everybody can be part of the Vikings Futsal juggernaut.

The Tasmanian mens team competed in their first ever National Club Championships and with all the players coaching junior teams through the day and backing up for two games a night they did extremely well in sweltering conditions.

The team which included Jon Foley-Donaghue, Huw Jarvis, Corey Smith, Igor Sao Jose, Michael McKenna and Trent Pearce alongside imports Guillermo Jorge and Gilberto Costa from Brazil finished in 5th place after looking like being tournament darkhorses early.

The side started with wins over defending Pacific League Champion Victoria 6-3 which included Australia's best Futsal player in Fernando De Moraes and Northern NSW 10-0. The second night saw them beat the New Zealand Vikings National Side 6-3 in what was a one sided affair before playing tournament favourites Queensland which had 4 Futsalroos on display. The game against Queensland was called off just before half time due to a series head injury to Guillermo and Queensland was rewarded the result 2-1 as is stood.

The last night saw the team go down 8-2 to NSW and then draw 4-4 with NSW City in what were very taxing games with injuries and illness causing the starting side to suffer severely.

The final game saw the side miss the semi finals narrowly by going down to eventual finalist Western n Australia 4-2 with the bare 5 starting players. All in all it was a successful tournament and we hope to see our 2010 squad much stronger and in with a real shot.

The side was well served through out the tournament by Captain Jon Foley-Donaghue while the standout player was Michael McKenna who celebrated his performances with selection into the All-Star starting 5 for the tournament and has definitely put his hat in the ring for selection for the Australian Squad which heads to Russia later in the year, there were also some outstanding individual games played by Igor Sao Jose, Corey Smith and the two imports Guillermo and Gilberto throughout.

With selections for the Australian side announced within the next two weeks we are hoping see Michael and perhaps others picked in the squad.

Congratulations to Michael on his performance and we hope that he is the first Tasmanian included in a National Mens Futsal Side.

Junior Nationals
The first ever National Club Championships for Tasmania was very successful with the junior sides finishing with their heads held very high after giving the other states an amazing battle.

In the National Championships Tasmania had three sides which made finals only to go down in the most painful and narrow defeats. The 15 Girls side based in the North of Tasmania unluckily went down in the final in a penalty shoot out which was the girls only loss of the tournament and was absolutely heartbreaking while the 12 Boys Islanders Academy squad backed up their 2008 National Schools Championships victory by making their way to the final of the 12 boys division with 6 wins out of 7. In the final they met Qld City who had been together for 4 yrs and were reigning Australian Regional Champions. The final was end to end all game and was dominated by possession in what was a very tactical chess style final ending with Qld scoring in the last minute to win the game 3-2 and send our boys home with the runners up trophy.

The 12 Girls Eastern region squad also made the final in their age group which saw 12 Girls and 13 Girls groups together in the round robin stage due to numbers. The girls made the 12 Girls final only to go down very narrowly in a game that could have gone either way. These sides were very unlucky in the end but these results along with the 11 Boys, 12 Boys, 13 Boys and 12 Girls reaching the semi finals stage of their first Nationals it shows the power that Tasmania has going forward.

Squad selections and trials will be held at the end of the 2009 Summer Season for 2010 National Championships. We are hoping this will give Tasmania the best possible chance of reaching the best results.

Skyrail North Queensland Regional Titles.
The first Skyrail Northern State Futsal Championships held between 23rd and 25th of January 2009 were a huge success with 12 teams competing from the NQ Region.
All teams competing showed a great deal of skill and work ethics as they went about their job on the court.

The tireless efforts of Coaches and Managers meant that the players were well looked after and had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

The tournament was a first for many of our players, coaches and managers and I’m sure that the experience gained by all will be invaluable in our efforts to improve the game we all love.

Congratulations to all team who competed!!

It was great to see the teams including the U10 Boys Thunder, U11 Boys Thunder, U12 Boys Thunder, U13 Boys Lightning, U15 Boys Lightning, U16 Boys Thunder, U13 Girls Thunder, U15 Girls Thunder, Thunder, Youth and Senior Mens, making the Grand Finals.

All teams from U10 Boys to Open Mens made the finals. WHAT A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT!!

http://www.isport.com.au/futsal/qfnq/

Special thanks must go to all the players who also played in higher age groups often playing up to 6 games a day - their efforts and assistance was appreciated

Special mention must also be made of the U13 and U15 Girls teams who competed against the boys. Girls you did us all proud and the effort and improvement you displayed over the three days was terrific. GO GIRLS!!

Vikings Acknowledge Their Shining Lights From National Titles.

The cream of Vikings’ National Titles where announced throughout the concluding stages of the 4 day event.
One player in each position in all age groups where selected as a 2009 Vikings All Star. The selections where made by opposition coaches whom gave their opinion at the end of each individual game.

Although not set in concrete, the prestigious honour of an All Star selection puts a player well and truly up in the eyes of the selection panel for when they sit to pick the Vikings overseas tours later in the year.

A vast spread of competing States where represented and despite the award placing accolades on the individual, more often then not they where reflective of the dominant team in each category.

Pictures of the award winners can be found on the Vikings home page in the Photo Gallery
