Futsal soccer camp coming to Waxahachie

By CHAD WILSON

Friday, February 6, 2009Soccer players, your camp is coming. In late March, Thiago Goncalves returns to Waxahachie for the second year with a Brazilian Futsal training camp.

“We use Brazilian methods to teach soccer skills effectively while at the same time encouraging kids with valuable life principles such as excellence, perseverance, goal setting, selflessness, faith and responsibility,” Goncalves said.

The camp will be held on Friday, March 20 and Friday, March 27 for boys and girls ages 10-13 and on Saturday, March 21 and Saturday, March 28. The Friday camps start at 6 p.m. while the Saturday camps start at 5 p.m.

Held at the Salvation Army Gym in Waxahachie, the camp costs $110 and includes seven hours of up-close training, Christian values and a camp T-shirt.

Goncalves is currently the men’s soccer head coach at Dallas Christian College; he has a USSF national license and a NSCAA license. Currently coaching FC Dallas youth, he has coaching experience with Southwestern Assemblies of God University and the Texas Longhorns Soccer Club. He played college soccer at Bryan College (2002-2005) and played in Brazilian Futsal first division Goias F.C.

“This camp is a fundraiser for missionary work I’m running in Niger this May,” he said. “I’m taking a team of experienced soccer players to play an exhibition match against the Nigerian national soccer team, being that it will be televised, and broadcasted to the entire nation.

“We are expecting thousands of people to watch the game and hear the testimonies of the players coming. The goal of this game is evangelization as Niger is a nation primarily Muslim, if I’m not wrong the stats indicate 99 percent Muslim.”

He said such an event has never been done in that country and the team will be recognized when it arrives in the city by the mayor of the capital Niamey, and will be transported to the government building where there will be a reception for them.

“The Futsal camp is how I get the people here in the states involved with this mission, and how the funds are raised for the international ministry. The Futsal camp is the initial step of the ministry. We minister to people here in America and through their support in the Futsal camps we reach the people oversees,” he said.
