Offaly sides unlucky at Leinster Primary Schools Futsal Finals

18 February 2009

By Staff Reporter

THE two Offaly representatives in the Leinster Primary Schools Futsal Finals performed very strongly and were unlucky not advance much further in the competition.
In the boys section, Edenderry BNS only missed out on a place in the knock-out stages on goal difference. The side that got out of their group went on to win the competition held in the National Basketball Arena on February 10. Edenderry started withADVERTISEMENTa 3-1 win over St Coleman's and they followed that up with a 2-1 win over Maynooth.

That meat they went into their last game against Pope John Paul NS of Malahide knowing they needed a win to advance as they were behind on goal difference. The tight game ended 1-1 which meant the Dublin side squeaked through leaving Edenderry BNS unbeaten but unfortunately out of the competition.

It was a similar story in the girl's competition as Mucklagh NS were unbeaten in their three games but again they narrowly missed out on getting out of the group. The girls started with a great 5-0 win over St Kevin's but they were held to a 0-0 draw in their second game against St Mary's.

That meant, much like the boys from Edenderry, the girls from Mucklagh went into their final game knowing they needed a win to advance but against eventual finalists St Coleman's they managed a creditable 1-1 draw but it was not enough to see them through. St Coleman's eventually lost on penalties in the final.
