Thai Son Nam tops national futsal table

VietNamNet Bridge – Thai Son Nam have nine points after three victories to lead the national futsal (indoor football) championship taking place in HCM City.

Their third victory in a row since the beginning of the competition has helped Thai Son Nam secure the first place in the tournament.

In the contest's third day of competition, the defending champs defeated Pham Gia Auto 2-6 after being led in the first half. Pham Gia Auto had been considered one of the favourites going into the tournament, but they have turned in a disappointing performance, earning only one point after three games and ranking second from last.

Previously, Thai Son Nam - coached by former Thailand coach Piemkum Pattaya - had a comfortable 10-0 win over Maseco in its first match and defeated its sister team, Thai Son Bac, 4-2.

The National Futsal Championship kicked off in HCM City's Phu Tho Gymnasium last Saturday with the participation of nine teams and a prize of VND25 million (US$1,470) to be awarded to the champion.

Nine teams play in a round robin format, as a plan to divide the ten teams into two groups fell through when 2007 champions Dilmah Tea withdrew from the tournament.

The national championship, which wrap up next Saturday, are a chance for players to showcase their talent, as futsal officials will come to recruit players to compete on the national team in the Southeast Asian Futsal Championships.

Chosen players will also compete in the Asian Futsal Championship qualifier, the third Asian Indoor Games and the 25th SEA Games later this year in Laos.
