Macau to compete in ASEAN tournament in Vietnam

Sunday, 01 March 2009

Macau is set to compete in the ASEAN Football Federation's U-19 football championship and futsal tournament in Vietnam.
According to the Vietnamese News Agency, Viet Nam will host the ASEAN Football Federation’s U-19 football championship and futsal (indoor football) tournament this year.

During the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) meeting in Kuala Lumpur, the AFF designated Viet Nam as the host for two tournaments and series seminars on football this year.

According to the report, the regional youth football tournaments will be held in Ho Chi Minh City from August 5 to August 15.
The team will summon the best youth players for the year’s first training session at HCM City’s Thanh Long Sports Centre in July.

According to the VFF, the team coaching board will select top players from the National Under-17 Football Championship for the Bong Da (Football) Newspaper Cup at Thanh Long Sports Centre in June.
After the regional tournament, the team will compete at the 2010 Asian U-19 Football Championship qualifiers. Viet Nam will play in group E with Thailand, South Korea, Laos, Macau and Bangladesh.
At an international U-19 football tournament in HCM City last year, the team ranked second behind Thailand.

According to the report, the AFF Futsal tournament will be held from June 14 to June 20 in Vietnam's capital city.
Viet Nam’s futsal team was disqualified from the quarter-finals at the AFF Futsal Championship in Thailand last year.
In 2007, Viet Nam reached the semi-final of the ASEAN Futsal Championship at the Huamak Indoor Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
At the meeting in Malaysia, AFF officials said they appreciate VFF’s efforts to develop football in recent years.

The Viet Nam Football Championship, V-League is the most exciting tournaments in ASEAN region, attracting an average of 10,000 fans per game.

VFF general secretary Tran Quoc Tuan said that Viet Nam will bid to host the 2010 ASEAN Football Championship.
Viet Nam had hosted the regional tournament twice, in 1998 and 2004, the report added.
