Spurs win silver at the Ontario Futsal Cup

The Nepean Hotspurs Soccer Club is pleased to announce that the Hotspurs ’93 Devils (U16G) emerged as silver medalists at the 2008 Ontario Futsal Cup. Although new to the game of Futsal and carrying only seven players, the girls were eager to compete against top rated teams, including two past National Championship finalists. In order to prepare for the Ontario Futsal Cup, the Devils spent the winter competing in the Senior Women’s Division of the Ottawa Carleton Futsal League. In the semi final, the Devils faced the Russell Raiders, the 2006 Ontario Champions, in a close game which saw the Devils take a 3-0 lead into the half. The Raiders battled back in the second half scoring two goals, but the Devils were able to close the game out, winning by a final score of 3-2. In the finals, the Hotspurs faced the Etobicoke Energy, the reigning Ontario Futsal Cup Champions and Canadian National Finalists. With two players lost to injury, the Devils played the championship match, a 50 minute game, without any substitutes. Despite this disadvantage, the Devils took an early 2-0 lead. The Energy came back in the later part of the half to see the teams tied 3-3 at the half time whistle. The second half saw a hard fought battle with the lead changing hands twice, and a 5-5 score at the 38th minute. Battling to the end, the Devils were unable to keep pace with Etobicoke, who emerged 8-5 winners at the final whistle. The Nepean Hotspurs U16G “’93 Devils” will be playing in the U16G Level 3 division of the Eastern Ontario Soccer League this summer, and will battle for promotion to the Ontario Youth Soccer League in 2010.
