Champions League returns

by Yee Jie Min

THE Ultimate Champions League is back for its second year with the collaboration of Sports Planet – the largest futsal venue provider in Malaysia and Southeast Asia – and with its official beverage partner, Permanis Sdn Bhd.

The knockout stages of the "Revive-Sports Planet: Ultimate Champions League 2009" will be held at all 15 Sports Planet venues, including Jakarta and Singapore, from March 21 until Oct 31.

The top two teams from each venue will advance to the grand finals which will be held on Nov 14 at Sports Planet Ampang.

The finals will see 64 teams, comprising the men’s and women’s categories, competing for cash prizes totalling RM63,000, as well as special awards for the Top Goal Scorer and the Best Goalkeeper.

This year’s league will feature the additional all-women’s futsal playoffs at the grand finals, as part of Sports Planet’s plan to expand the tournament.

"The main objective of this championship is to develop futsal in Malaysia. It is a tournament for them (futsal players) to showcase their skills and gain experience," said Sports Planet Sdn Bhd executive director, Wong Horr Wai.

Alongside the Ultimate Champions League, two mini futsal events will be organised for the media and the various football fan clubs in Malaysia.

The "Revive-Sports Planet: Ultimate Champions League 2009 – Media Cup" and "Revive-Sports Planet: Ultimate Champions League 2009 – Supporters’ Club Cup" are scheduled to take place on April 18 and Aug 8, respectively.

Those interested to take part in the tournament can register at any of the Sports Planet venues in the country with an entry fee of RM200 per team.
