Bellingen High teams surge through Zone Futsal Competition

24/03/2009

Once again, it was time for BHS to enter the fray of the State Futsal competitions for 2009 starting with the Zone Carnival at Coffs Harbour. BHS entered both boys and girls teams in the Under 16 and Under 19 (Opens) age groups.

BOYS
Under 19s. There was never an option of matching last year’s incredible BHS side which reached the pinnacle and came 2nd in the National Titles. With 9 of those 10 players finishing school last year, 2009 was always going to be a tough rebuilding assignment. Despite that, debutantes Shaun Connor, Josh Currell, George Mittasch and Julian Hulbert put in strong performances which surprised everyone especially hapless CHEC, who we dispatched to last place. Captain Marcel Tussie, consistently led from the front and, with typical brilliance, shepherded his inexperienced side into the Semi-finals. Unfortunately they failed to build on that developing form and were knocked out in the Semis.

Under 16s. The Under 16s however were in a much better position to perform. Most players had Futsal competition experience and quickly got into their stride. With star Goalkeeper, Simba Kuertsler, defenders Adam Marks, Tony Mittasch and Billy Mills and finishing with brilliant striker Robert Marshall, the side was brimming with talent. Other than a 14-0 hammering of Christian Community school however, the competition was very tight. Still, the BHS boys put in some great performances and finished as both highest goal scorers and pool winners to march into the Semis. There they knocked over Bishop Druitt in a tight Semi which only really turned our way when cramp-ridden Tony Mittasch hobbled into the fray and made the game his own.

Since both Grand Finalists were guaranteed to proceed to the Regional Finals, then the result was irrelevant, so BHS gave starting berths to the younger players who hadn’t seen as much game time as others. Not surprisingly, Orara High seized their window of opportunity and took out the game, however BHS can be confident if we happen to meet them at some stage later in the competition. Well done guys.

GIRLS
Under 19s. The 19s girls started the competition strongly against Christian Community with the score 4-1 by half time, but eased off throughout the second half to only take the game 7-5. It looked like fitness might let the girls down with training having been disrupted by year 12 commitments. However, the girls went on to only lose to only one team all day. That team Duval HS were the winners, however, the girls still qualify for the regional finals finishing 2nd in the zone. Throughout the day the girls scored 20 goals, 8 of which were scored by Georgia Myles who has still got the touch. Georgia, Jess and Sam Snow, Nicole Layt and Bonnie Drough all played a great team game together. A special mention must go to Ruby Campbell, Kim Williams and Jenny LaSpada who played so well in the 19s team despite qualifying for the 16s team.

Under 16s. This team is HOT! Many of the girls coming from last years undefeated under 14s team (NCCHS Champions). However, the day started badly with two of the teams in the competition pulling out (they must have seen the girls coming). This ended up becoming a good challenge for the girls as they got to play some 19s teams. The first game was against BDC 16s who they convincingly beat 7-0. From there things only got better. They came up against Christian Community 19s and thrashed them 5-0 and then beat CHEC red 19s 10-0. WOW! The final was against BDC 16s and the girls scored 6 in each half with the final score 12-0! On the day the girls scored 34 for and 0 against. Goals went to Kanisha Phillips-Cooke 13, Malynda Post 10, Meg Roberts 6, Maddy Tarrant 2, Jemma Boswell 2 and Maggie Mills 1. This meant all the girls scored, except for the goal keeper Jemara Imrie, who had a perfect score. Watch out for this team as, of course, they qualified for the regional finals.
