Colleges and Universities Futsal Cup to kick-off next week

Friday, 27 March 2009

24 teams from Colleges and Universities will take part in the first official Futsal Cup for third level. Four regional competitions will be held on Tuesday 31st March in University College Cork, NUI Galway, IT Blanchardstown and NUI Maynooth.

All institutions that are members of the Colleges Football Association of Ireland (CFAI) and Irish Universities Football Union (IUFU) were invited to enter a team in the competition. Each event will be coordinated by FAI Third Level Facilitators.

Mark Langtry of UCD, who captained the Irish Futsal squad that beat England 2-0 in the recent UEFA Futsal Championship Qualifiers in Dublin, is set to feature in the regional event.

The National Final will take place in the new FAI Futsal venue in Trinity Comprehensive, Ballymun, Dublin in April.

Winners of the National Final will be invited in association with CUSAI to enter the 6th European Universities Futsal Championship which will be organised in Podgorica (Montenegro) from July 20-26, 2009.

FAI National Coordinator for Schools, Colleges and Universities, Gerard Dunne, is coordinating the event and is delighted with the response.

He said: “As part of the third level development plan we are looking to bring futsal to more players and this is our first major event. Initial discussions took place with the CFAI and IUFU and their support has allowed us to get so many of their members taking part.

“We have four great venues for the regional finals and I want to thank each of the hosts for making their facilities available to us. The new third level facilitators are running the regional events and without their help this could not work.

“The only disappointment was the unavailability of Universities from Northern Ireland, but they have committed to enter next year. The fact that winners of the National Final will be invited to enter the European Universities Futsal Championship in July will help increase the profile of this event.”
