New Straits TimesRecord 132 teams fight it outA RECORD 132 teams competed in the inaugural Rakan Muda Unity Futsal Carnival at the Purnana Futsal Centre in Taiping, Perak, over the weekend.
The response was overwhelming with teams from as far as Kuala Lumpur and Alor Star entering for the Under-12, Under-18 and Under-25 events.
The event was jointly organised by the Perak Ministry of Youth and Sports, Rakan Muda Department in the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and SportsUnite.
The goal of promoting unity was well appreciated as most teams comprised players of two to three races.
Special prizes under the Anugerah Perpaduan category in the form of Adidas sports goods were presented to the most multi-racial teams that performed well in the three categories.
The winners of the Unity awards were Perantau FC from Kuala Lumpur (Under-12), Sharkboys FC from Taiping (Under-18) and Public Bank FC from Alor Star (Under-25).
In the Under-12 final, Kepala Batas FC outclassed KRS FC 'A' 7-1 while in the Under-18, Don Amb FC beat Sungei Acheh FC 4-2 for the title.
In the Under-25 final, Public Bank Alor Star edged Bonito FC 2-1.
Wasitah Mohd Yusof, the deputy director-general of the Rakan Muda Development Division, Ministry of Youth and Sports, presented the prizes.
The biggest winner of the day was the spirit of unity, sportsmanship and racial intergration displayed by the teams and their supporters.
