Michael Graybeal, Sports Editor
After a very successful, and productive first two seasons, the Ashe Futsal League opted to expand their age groups heading into their third year prior to the start of this season. This season, the league’s third year, they hosted a High School Division, along with the traditional 10-14 year old division.
As the season wound down, the Red Team earned the title of Champions of the 10-14 Division, as they earned the top spot among six teams.
This year, Ashe Futsal League sponsored a new division, opened to high school aged players. The league fielded four teams in the inaugural year of the division, and had a successful year. After multiple rematches of games throughout the year, the Orange Team concluded the season as the High School Division Champions.
Futsal is a version of indoor soccer, which consists of teams playing five on five on a hard surface court. In the scenario of Ashe Futsal League, the games are held at Family Central inside the boundaries of the basketball court.
Futsal games emphasize the player’s use of ball control, passes in tight spaces, and player’s creativity and improvisation. The regulation ball used is a weighted size four ball, to allow a faster paced game by limiting bounces.
The 2008-09 season marked the third season of the Ashe Futsal League, under the direction of Wayne Cable and Greg Keys, who have dedicated numerous hours towards the development of the league.
At the end of the season, it was announced that this would be the final season that Cable and Keys would be in charge of the league, as next year, Ashe County Parks and Recreation Department would take over the League.
The League wanted to express their thanks to everyone who has helped develop the league thus far, and they hope that the league will continue to grow under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Department.
The League also wanted to congratulate all the players and coaches on a successful season.
