LUCKY Skelmersdale youngsters will be going play a new type of football in Manchester tomorrow.
A group of children were selected to take part in a Futsal competition by West Lancashire District Council’s sports development team.
Futsal is a different type of football played indoors using new techniques.
Youngsters who are chosen will be coached to play this type of game properly against teams from all over the North West.
To get chosen the children have had to get their boots on and go along to the Easter kick-about sessions which took place throughout Skelmersdale during the holidays.
The kick-about sessions were organised through sports development’s Street Sport Project, which has been implemented in areas of Skelmersdale, including Digmoor, Moorside and Tanhouse.
The idea behind was to use sport to reduce anti-social behaviour and create positive opportunities for young people.
Some children had already sampled a Futsal tournament during the February half-term holidays. Although they didn’t win they were given a special mention for fair play and good behaviour.
Futsal’s name is derived from the Portuguese futebol de salao and the Spanish futbol sala/de salon which can be translated as ‘indoor football’. In Madrid in 1985 the name futbol de salon and all other names were changed officially into FUTSAL.
It is played between two teams of five players, one of whom is the goalkeeper, and up to seven substitutes per team. The game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used. Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regulation football.
The rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.
