Sporting Fingal Cup

The Sporting Fingal Cup kicked off on Wednesday the 22nd, with the first round of Under 18 Girls matches taking place in Corduff Sports Centre, Dublin 15. It is a brand new competition being run by Fingal County Council, the FAI and Sporting Fingal Football Club. Secondary Schools from all over Fingal have been invited to enter teams in the regional qualifiers for either the Girls’ Under 18 or Boys’ Under 16 Futsal competitions.

Dublin 15 kicked off the regional qualifiers today, with teams from Blakestown, Riversdale, and St. Mary’s, Cabra taking part. Blakestown Seniors and Riversdale qualified for Finals’ Day which takes place in Corduff on May 19th. They will be joined by 4 more qualifiers from the north of the County.

The winners will be presented with their prizes at half-time when Sporting Fingal take on Waterford United in the League of Ireland First Division clash on Friday 22nd May in Morton Stadium.

Speaking about the tournament, Sporting Fingal Club Promotions Officer Conor Cullen said “It’s a great initiative, and the FAI Development Officers have done a fantastic job in organising it. The standard of football being played today in Corduff was excellent, and we expect that will continue throughout. But the most important thing is that the boys and girls, get involved, enjoy the games and hopefully it will help develop their talent.”

FAI Development Officer Martin Doyle said “Overall it was a very good start to the competition. The girls seemed to get great enjoyment from taking part and there were some excellent players out there. We’re really trying to promote Ladies’ Football in Dublin 15 and hopefully this competition will encourage girls to get involved.”
