Community Coaching With Boro Futsal and Middlesbrough Council

Futsal is coming to the masses in Middlesbrough this summer with Middlesbrough Futsal Club and Middlesbrough Borough Council. The Southland’s Centre, Middlesbrough, will see the start of open access futsal coaching sessions for boys and girls ages 8-11, starting on Tuesday 19th May, with more groups to be added over the coming months.

Futsal is a version of indoor, small-sided football played extensively in South America, Spain and Portugal and is growing in almost every other country in the world. It can be attributed to the technical abilities of players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Robinho and Boro’s own adopted Brazilian, Juninho, who recommends starting with futsal before moving to 11-a-side:

“I played [futsal] since I was six years old until I was 13 and then I went on to play 11-a-side. It helped me a lot because when you're young, you're smaller, so when you play in a smaller game you have more contact with the ball and it helps you develop your technique. When you take this into the big pitch you feel more prepared.”

Damon Shaw, Middlesbrough Futsal Club Chairman, will be hoping that more and more children play futsal for not only the future of the 11-a-side game, but for the future of futsal as well.

“Many people in England see futsal only as a development tool for football, and while I don’t disagree with the benefits of futsal to a football player, I think that we should also be aware of the opportunities presented by futsal in its own right, such as playing for Boro in the FA Futsal League or representing England in a World Cup.”

These coaching sessions will provide a fun, safe environment for children to play futsal and meet new friends, while also developing their skills, with qualified FA coaches. Players of all abilities are welcome as the sessions are open access, and the more gifted players will get the chance to join Middlesbrough Futsal Club juniors.
