FUTSAL FIRST

Birmingham University hosted the first ever Futsal Exhibition at the Universities Munrow sports centre.

The exhibition was organised in partnership with the Birmingham County Football Association and Team United Birmingham Futsal Club.
Mike Smethurst of the Birmingham County Football Association was present to witness a great evening.

The evening saw Birmingham University women and men’s teams play Team United Birmingham Futsal club in two exhibition games.

The first game saw the women’s team’s play each other it was a first for both teams as they had never met each other in a game of futsal before.
The game was well contested and played at a high standard, overall an excellent example of women’s futsal.
Final Score: Birmingham University 3-8 Team United Birmingham.

Then it was the men’s turn, a big step for the Birmingham University team as they had never played a team from the national futsal league before, the lack of futsal experience from the university team showed from the early stages of the game and as the game went on it became very one sided.
Final Score: Birmingham University 4-18 Team united Birmingham.

The aim of the evening was to create a better relationship/link between Birmingham University and BCFA to help develop futsal within the University.
Team United Birmingham will hopefully provide a club link with the University this will give an opportunity/pathway to players at the University for both male and female to play futsal outside the University.

Birmingham University will also be starting its own inter university futsal league, this will help identify potential players for the men’s futsal team.

Birmingham University men’s team will be looking to compete in the BUCS Futsal Championships and the Birmingham Futsal League next season.

Hopefully this will be the start of a new futsal era within the University.
