Veterans Pack Squad For AFF Tourney

After two months of scouting players, Indonesian national futsal team coach Justinus Lhaksana turned to experience ahead of the 2009 AFF Futsal Championship.

The training camp started on Monday for the June 8-14 tournament in Ho Chi Minh City, and Justinus said he decided to fill out his 14-man squad with players who meshed well with his tactical approach, he said on Saturday. “There are lots of other players who have great individual technique and skill here, but these are the players who can play according to the team’s need.”

The team consists largely of national team regulars. A notable omission is star Jaelani Ladjanibi, under investigation by the National Futsal Body after getting into a dispute with spectators in the Indonesian Futsal League’s series in Bandung, West Java, on March 9.

With only two months to prepare, Justinus said he would immediately focus on “how to make the team play effectively and efficiently in a match.”

Indonesia came second at the 2008 tournament, sweeping through the group stage but losing 5-1 to Thailand in the final.

In Vietnam, it has been drawn alongside Thailand, Burma and Malaysia in Group A. In Group B is Vietnam, Brunei, East Timor and the Philippines.

“I believe we can at least emulate our achievement in the previous championship and go to the final again,” Justinus said.
