VOV News2009 ASEAN futsal championship kicks offThe Vietnamese team has won its first victory at the 2009 ASEAN Futsal Championship, which opened at the Phu Tho competition hall in Ho Chi Minh City on June 8.
The team defeated their Philippine rivals 3-0, while Thai defending champions thrashed Myanmar 16-6 and Indonesia secured a 7-3 win over Malaysia.
In group B, which is considered ‘less tough’ than group A, the Vietnamese team was hard pressed to overcome the Philippine underdogs.
During the match, Vietnam frequently lost the ball. It seemed as if they were deploying the tactics of a traditional 11-footballer team, which is not suitable for an indoor court.
As a result, Vietnam scored only one goal in the first half and two additional goals in the second half, when their rivals started to run out of steam.
This victory is likely to give Vietnam a ticket to the semi-finals, since they only face an easy contest against low-rankingEast Timor in the rest of the qualifying round.
