The Star On LineEarly exit for futsal teamFriday June 12, 2009PETALING JAYA: Malaysia made an early exit from the seventh Asean Football Federation (AFF) futsal championship after failing to qualify for the semi-finals in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday.
It was all over for the national team after suffering two straight defeats in Group A. They lost to fancied Indonesia and defending champions Thailand with identical 3-7 scores.
The only consolation for coach P. Balakrishnan’s men was the 2-0 win over Myanmar in their last group fixture on Wednesday, which saw them finish third in the standings behind Thailand and Indonesia.
It looks like Malaysia, who won the silver medal at the 2007 SEA Games in Korat after going down to Thailand in the final, will be hard-pressed to emulate their feat at the Laos Games in December.
Malaysia have never beaten Thailand in the AFF series since the inaugural championship in Shah Alam in 2001.
