EMERALD FUTSAL LEAGUE KICK OFF

Ireland’s first long term adults Futsal league is kicking off in Dublin on Saturday 13th June and will run every Saturday for 16 weeks until October 2009 at the BRL Umbro Arena, Ballymun, Dublin 9.
The league will be called The EMERALD FUTSAL LEAGUE and is affiliated to the Leinster FA and FAI.

Futsal is the official UEFA and FIFA version of indoor 5 a side soccer and the game that’s helped to develop the silky skills of Messi, Ronaldinho and numerous world superstars over the last few decades.

The FAI has run a League of Ireland pre season Futsal competition over the last three years and this competition has been a great success. The winning teams have gone on to represent Ireland in the UEFA Futsal Cup (see www.uefa.com/futsal) and performed very well. However, many adult players now want to play Futsal on a longer term basis and in order to provide these opportunities, the FAI is aiding the creation of this new pilot Emerald Futsal League which is expected to accommodate all of the top Futsal players in Ireland.
To begin, there will be one division with the league expanding to accommodate a number of divisions in early 2010. Eventually, it is envisaged that the league will cater for Futsal enthusiasts of all age and ability levels with the higher divisions being the flagships and providing a pathway to which all players can aspire.

The new Emerald League which will initially be Leinster based is expected to be replicated and rolled out across the other provinces over the next few years. It’s an ideal opportunity for the FAI to tap into the vast numbers of players playing football socially throughout the country and provide them with new opportunities to enjoy football and realise their full potential.
