Gaston GazetteCopa Del Pueblo Futsal at the Abbey this weekendJune 12, 2009The Belmont Abbey men's soccer program, in conjunction with El Pueblo and Fiesta del Pueblo will host the Copa del Pueblo Futsal Tournament this Saturday and Sunday, June 13 and 14, at the Wheeler Center on the campus of Belmont Abbey College. Both days matches will begin at 80 a.m. Admission is free.
Futsal is a version of indoor soccer, according to Wikipedia. It is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regulation football.
Belmont Abbey will serve as one of four qualifying locations in the state of North Carolina, and only the top four adult teams and the top two youth teams from each of the four qualifying rounds will advance to the championship round at La Fiesta del Pueblo, which will be held at Dorton Arena in Raleigh Aug. 29-30, with the winner receiving $5,000.
Copa del Pueblo is the fastest, most exciting soccer event in North Carolina for both youth and adult open teams. Futsal is the only FIFA sanctioned indoor soccer in the world. Teams will compete for over $13,000 in cash and prizes. Matches will be five on five, single elimination.
DivisionsAdult Division: 16 years old and older
Youth Division: 15 years old and younger
To qualify as a youth player, the player's birthday must not be before Aug. 31, 1993.
