Binh PhuongThailand’s futsal (indoor football) players, who have won the ASEAN championship six times since its inception, beat newcomers Vietnam 4-1 in the final of this year’s tournament in Ho Chi Minh City Sunday.
Suphawut fired for the defending champions right in the first minute at the Phu Tho Indoor Stadium. Then, Thusiry doubled in the 18th minute before netting his second goal about 10 minutes later. Kongnimit scored another goal for the Thais after just a few minutes.
In the 38th minute, Anh Dung scored a consolation goal for the home side. The trophy goes to the Thai team on June 14 in Ho Chi Minh City
Before this year’s competition, Vietnam had never earned any medal in the regional futsal tournament, which is officially called the AFF Futsal Championship. AFF stands for the ASEAN Football Federation.
In the game for the third place, Indonesia (last year’s runners-up, who lost to Vietnam in the semifinals) beat the Philippines 4-3.
Thai player Chalaemkhet earned the best player title, while Vietnam’s Phuoc Anh was selected the best goalkeeper. Indonesia’s Karmadi was the top scorer.
The tournament started on June 8 with the participation of East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
