Adrian SeconiWed, 24 Jun 2009Alan Craig does not usually keep a close eye on the letter box for so-called snail mail.
But when a letter arrived about a month ago, the 15-year-old was probably excited enough to kiss the postie. The correspondence congratulated him on his selection in the New Zealand under-16 futsal team to compete in a tournament in China in August.
One of the first things the year-11 John McGlashan College pupil rushed off to do was search Guangzhou, China on the internet.
The team has two weekend training sessions scheduled in Christchurch as it builds for the tournament, but Alan has not had the opportunity to meet his team-mates yet.
He took up the sport about three years ago. He loves football and futsal seemed the perfect foil during the off-season.
He plays at the back but loves to push forward to look for goal-scoring opportunities.
Futsal is a version of football between two teams of five players usually played indoors. The ball is smaller and bounces less than a regular football, and the rules encourage players to improvise.
