Futsal fever

June 25, 2009

Oldham Athletic Futsal club will have two teams competing in the Umbro National Futsal festival at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield this weekend.

Following on from the senior team competing in the regional competition at Hillsborough, Latics will be entering an Under 12’s and 16’s team.

Both sides will be competing for the first time in one of the nation’s fastest growing sports which is popular on the continent with prestigious clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona also having specific futsal teams.

Some of the world’s best players including Cristiano Ronaldo, Robinho and Lionnel Messi have grown up playing futsal and now youngsters and adults will have the opportunities within Oldham to try and emulate these stars.

This weekend’s competition will now kick start a whole host of futsal activity that will be developed at the start of this forthcoming football season across the borough. Oldham Athletic Community Trust will be linking with grassroots clubs and partners whilst being supported by the club to develop the senior and junior set up.

Oldham Athletic Community Trusts grassroots development officer, Jamie Blood said: "The upcoming festival is a great chance for the Oldham Athletic community teams to show their skills and enjoy themselves at a national level.

"Representing their local professional club is always a great achievement and the lads from both age groups have worked hard towards this. The future looks bright within Oldham for futsal and can only grow from strength to strength."
