Schumacher staying put at Interviú

Thursday 25 June 2009

Schumacher has committed himself to UEFA Futsal Cup holders Interviú Madrid for the rest of his career – but the team that beat them to the Spanish title, ElPozo Murcia FS, have released Marcelo and goalkeeper Caio.

Schumacher deal
Interviú, who like Murcia will enter next season's UEFA Futsal Cup in the Elite round, secured a record third European title in April in Ekaterinburg and Schumacher, like goalkeeper Luis Amado, has been part of all three triumphs. Part of Brazil's 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup-winning side, Schumacher was out of contract on 30 June but the 33-year-old is now committed to Interviú, who he has helped to five league title since joining from CR Vasco de Gama, until he chooses to retire. "I am very pleased by the agreement," he said. "This renewal is dedicated to [late club president] Manolo Saorín, may he rest in peace. He was the one who brought me to Spain and told me to end my career at Interviú."

Álvaro surgery
Murcia reclaimed the league title from Interviú this month, and have allowed two long-standing squad members to leave, Spanish international Marcelo and second-choice goalkeeper Caio Gonçalves. Meanwhile, Álvaro has undergone surgery on his left foot and will be out for three months, giving him plenty of time to return for Murcia's Elite round bid in mid-November, plus Spain's 2010 UEFA European Futsal Championship campaign in Hungary from 19 to 30 January.
