Unstoppable is an understatement for how Quality Distributors’ player Matthew Welton scorched the opposition last night.
It was a pummeling.
Welton led his team to a 8-0 shutout victory over Genesis in their 2009 Guam Football Association Men’s Futsal League game at the Astumbo gymnasium in Dededo.
The stellar play by Welton, who is known for his punishing striking capabilities, proved once again why he is one of the league’s most feared goal scorers as he tallied five goals in the win.
“I can’t really take all of the credit,” Welton said. “I mean if not for my teammates giving me some great looks at the goal, none of those shots would have went in.”
After a feeling out process became the theme early on, Quality struck, 14 minutes in, as Welton nailed his first goal of the game inside Genesis’ red-zone for a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, Welton struck again as he received a pass from teammate Dave Manibusan at half-court.
Welton then used his skills to dribble the ball down court, through traffic and scored from 4-yards out.
As the halftime break neared, both teams seemed eager to score by any means. Once again, it was Welton who scored as he received a pass from Quality goalie Rodney Camacho from the other end of the court. As the ball touched the concrete, Welton quickly went to work and scored another goal, leaving Genesis goalie Cody Ott pondering how he and his team can stop Welton going into the break.
“We thought we could try to contain him after he scored the first three goals. Obviously, we were wrong,” Ott said.
As the second half began, Quality continued to dominate the ball on both ends. In the 27th minute, Manibusan scored a goal of his own, putting his team up 4-0 on a perfectly timed kick just outside the red-zone.
“At that point, I figured it was best to let my teammates in on the fun,” Welton said.
Genesis was given a free opportunity after a Quality player was yellow-carded. Unfortunately for Genesis, Quality keeper Camacho denied the attempt.
In the 35th minute, Quality’s Christian Toves netted the ball with ease after Ott was caught out of place, giving his team a 5-0 lead. Welton was credited with an assist on the play.
Eight minutes later, Quality scored again as Andre Gadia sent the ball scorching into the back of the net from outside the scoring box for a 6-0 lead. Once again, Welton was credited with an assist on the play.
Welton proceeded to close the game by scoring in the 45th minute and again in the 49th minute for the final 8-0 victory.
“It feels good – it really does,” Welton said. “I wanted to share the scoring opportunities and I did. I think I did a good job at that.”
In other results from last night, Inter FC defeated the Cobras 2-1. Action continues this Sunday at the Agat gymnasium with the first game starting at 2 p.m.
