FAI Futsal PortalCork City learn UEFA Futsal Cup fateFriday, 03 July 2009CORK CITY face a testing trip to Bulgaria for their debut in the UEFA Futsal Cup next month.
The Rebel Army clinched the FAI Futsal League of Ireland crown in stunning fashion earlier this year but face a step-up in class in the Preliminary round of the futsal version of the UEFA Champions League.
Liam Murphy's youngsters have been named in Group A with host side MFC Varna while Moldovans SC Tornado and Gazi Üniversitesi of Turkey will make up the remainder of the group.
Fixtures are scheduled for 15-23 August with the group winners progressing to the main qualifying round of the 2009/10 UEFA Futsal Cup (26 September-4 October).
The draw has already been made for that section with Hungarian side MVFC Berettyóújfalu acting as hosts as the Group A winners will also meet Italian giants Luparense C/5 and crack Ukrainian outfit FC Taim Lvov.
FAI Futsal Co-ordinator Derek O'Neill said: "This is about as tough a draw as City could have received.
"Ireland has achieved a win in each year it has participated in Europe with both Shamrock Rovers and St Pat's doing extremely well in the past two years so we're hoping Cork can do the same.
"They were very impressive in winning the national crown under serious competition from the likes of St Patrick's Athletic and Wexford Youths but this is a massive test."
City's star performers in the domestic competition included futsal international Craig Duggan, Ian Turner and Kevin Long.
