Futsal Tops Scoring Mark in Week 4

Thursday, July 9, 2009

Luka Mrakovic drilled in 14 goals in three games during the San Diego Futsal League on July 5 at Alliant University.

Mrakovic, 7, was a busy man, playing three consecutive games for his Futsal 5 and Surf Blue teams. Mrakovic displayed a one-directional style, going forward with all of his tenacity and determination. He showcased unique technical abilities, tactical understanding and, obviously, a knack for goals.

Goals were the name of the game on Sunday as an unprecedented 136 league goals were scored in 11 games, an average of more than 12 goals per contest.

Rene Chavira’s coed U7 Academy team continued to shine with its third consecutive shutout, registering an 8-0 win over the Surf Boyz. The Academy team is comprised of girls and boys from the South Bay area who are demonstrating an incredible sense for the game, team composure and wonderful technical abilities with the ball.

“It is a pure joy to watch the team play as they do it with such ease,” Futsal director Mario Mrakovic said. “They have such an amazing skill level for that age group.”

The most entertaining match was a battle of the sexes between Futsal Fabulous and PQ Futsal. Fabulous, which is made up of five girls -- Tavi Mata, Brittney Viboch, Sarah Chase, Jordyn Garfein, Hailey “Lefty” Bruce -- and one boy, Ethan Uno, was pitted against an older, all-boys PQ team.

Despite being a stronger team on paper and taking an 8-7 lead into the half, the PQ boys found themselves down 13-11 with only minutes remaining in the match. PQ managed to tie up the game, 13-13, but the game was a great example that both girls and boys can coexist in the Futsal environment.
