Hassan, Nair in dream team

Friday, July 10, 2009

WIN In Oceania Futsal project manager Scott Gilligan's dream team for the region has two Fiji players.

Gilligan's team is dominated by five Solomon Islanders, three New Caledonians and two from Vanuatu.

The former Australian Futsalroos coach and player picked Fiji's captain Kamal Hassan and Sandeep Nair.

His team includes Terry Quare and Luis Dominique of Vanuatu while New Caledonia's impressive goalkeeper Ronan Euzen, Ismael Tchovamili and Ivann Pourouoro made the cut as well.

Solomon Islands five includes the championship's leading goal scorer Jack Wetney, Micah Lea'alafa, captain Elliot Ragomo, Moffat Sikwa'ae and goalkeeper Paul Huia.

Gilligan revealed OFC had recently struck a three-year deal with world futsal powerhouse Spain.

"There is an opportunity for 21 days of training and build-up games in Spain. To ensure everyone benefits, we've decided to select three players from each of the four teams taking part," he said.

"Whichever team qualifies for the next World Cup in 2012 will tour Spain in 2011 but until next year, the Oceania team will have an equal representation. "

"I'm working on the logistics for this year's tour and will name players in a few weeks time," he said.

Loki learns code

Friday, July 10, 2009

THE OFC Futsal Championship has been a learning experience for Fiji team newcomer Uraia Loki.

Despite never playing the code prior to the championship, Loki, 23 has adapted well in just three days and his physical presence up front is paying dividends for the side.

The Nakelo, Tailevu native and former Fiji Under-23 striker said playing in the futsal championship made him a better player.

He said his biggest challenge was adjusting to the pace of the game.

"The ball travels really fast. That was the only hard part for me," said the lethal Nadi team striker.

"This is the first time I'm playing futsal and I've learnt a lot of things.

"It has enhanced my skills and ability to handle pressure in 11-a-side. In futsal, players have to be alert all the time and beat their markers in a small space," he said.

Loki believes team work will be the key for Fiji in tonight's final.

"The players have to put in a big effort and give everything they have if we are to win.

"I think we can handle them because the players are dedicated, committed and willing to listen to the coach's instructions," said Loki.

Loki is expected off the bench in a tough final match against the Solomon Islands tonight.
