Fiji LiveVanuatu finishes in third spotJuly 10, 2009The Vanuatu FUTSAL side finished the 2009 Oceania Football Confederation FUTSAL Championship in Suva in third place after beating New Caledonia 6-2 in the third and fourth spot playoff this evening.
After losing to the New Caledonians 4-5 in round robin competition, the Vanuatu side entered the playoff with a cautious approach and scored the goals that mattered.
Captain Vira Jack Ala lead by example and scored a hatrick to give his side a narrow 3-2 lead at halftime.
Stylish Don Mansale, Junior Malas and Lui Sifas added three more in the second spell to seal the third spot for Vanuatu who after round robin competition was placed fourth after losses in all of their matches.
New Caledonia’s first half goals were scored by Ivann Pourouoro and Ismael Tchovamili.
Vanuatu coach Marco Herrominly was happy with his team’s performance tonight and said they were glad to return home with the third finishing.
“The players really played well tonight and have impressed me.”
“We had a lot of ups and downs in this championship but I am happy to see the team register a win in the last match and finish third.”
“We will need to work hard in future championships and for the World Cup Qualifiers as the competition is getting intense with all countries in the region improving” he added.
New Caledonia coach Eric Michalak said his team had started well but lost concentration which proved to be their downfall in the game.
“This was a good championship and we had upset Vanuatu in pool play and could have repeated this again tonight had the boys clicked well and not lost their concentration.”
“We will work on our mistakes and will back in full force in the coming championships and the World Cup qualifiers” said Michalak.

Oceania FootballOFC FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2009 - VANUATU FINISH THIRD WITH 6-2 WIN OVER NEW CALEDONIAFriday, 10 July 09A hat-trick to Vanuatu front-man Vira Jack Ala has driven his team to a 6-2 win over New Caledonia in tonight’s 3rd v 4th play-off match at Vodafone Arena in Suva, Fiji.
Against the run of play it was New Caledonia who scored first on 9 minutes.
Vanuatu's Junior Malas unfortunately tripped on the ball inside his own half and handed possession to opposition captain Ivann Pourouoro who made no mistake one-on-one with the keeper, placing his low shot in the corner.
But Vanuatu were enjoying greater possession and made that advantage count with the equaliser coming on 13 minutes to Vira Jack Ala after a neat short passing movement.
Vanuatu looked to be hitting their straps with a second goal to Ala on 17 minutes but immediately from the restart they went to sleep on defence and allowed Ismael Tchovamili a simple tap-in goal to level the scores again.
But Ala was in a goal-hungry mood and he completed his hat-trick with a third powerful drive into the New Caledonian net only a minute before the break, giving Vanuatu a one goal halftime advantage.
And Vanuatu stepped up their domination in the second half with a further three goals coming to Don Mansale early in the second half, Junior Malas after 32 minutes and Lui Sifas after 37 minutes.
Vanuatu coach Marco Herrominly was very pleased with his team’s determination in their final tournament fixture.
“Our boys really wanted to finish this tournament third. In the first half I wanted them to move forward and press as much as possible and at half time I told them I wanted them to concentrate on defending more – this strategy was successful."
"This year’s team doesn’t have a lot of experience, Vanuatu is putting more emphasis on the beach soccer but we will come back with a stronger team next year and we will be aiming to win the OFC Futsal Championship,” said Herrominly.
