Last night at the Astumbo gym, Team Genesis took on Guam Shipyard. Shipyard, with a 3-4-1 record, entered the contest with a slim, one-point lead over Genesis (3-5-0) on the standings table. A win by Genesis would have catapulted the team into seventh place, ahead of Shipyard, but it was not to be. At the end of regulation, Shipyard walked away with a 5-1 victory.
While the win virtually assures Shipyard a place in the playoffs that begin next week, Genesis finds itself on the edge, with Rovers F.C. and Community First at their heels for the final playoff spot.
Last night, neither team was able to produce an offensive push for the first 9 minutes. Then, in the 10th minute of play, Guam Shipyard's Zachary Pangelinan took a shot from near halfcourt that zipped right past Genesis goalkeeper Cody Ott for the game's first score.
It wasn't until the 13th minute that Team Genesis took a first shot on goal, but Shipyard goalkeeper Jorge Roberto denied the look. Genesis was allowed only two more shots for the remainder of the half, while Shipyard added another goal by Gabriel Sablan to go up 2-0 going into the break.
At the start of the second half, Team Genesis nearly ended the drought when Ryan Tiong sent in a hard shot with less than a minute elapsed. However, the ball deflected off the upright to keep Genesis scoreless.
Meanwhile, Shipyard continued to play pressure defense and make quick transitions to offense that led to another goal in the 40th minute and a commanding 3-0 lead.
Despite trailing, Team Genesis gave every ounce of effort to end the shutout -- and did so in the 47th minute when Kevin Hashimoto scored off a corner kick that deflected off Roberto and into the net.
Eduardo Calvo responded in the next minute by finding the back of the net to regain a three-goal lead for Shipyard at 4-1.
With less than 2 minutes to go, Team Genesis got a few opportunities, but the Shipyard defense proved too strong to allow any clear shots.
Just before the final buzzer, Pangelinan got another open look and scored his team's fifth goal of the game, giving Shipyard a comfortable four-goal margin of victory.
