Solo star joins Navua

Saturday, July 18, 2009

JACK Wetney, who scored two goals in the 8-1 drubbing of Fiji in the recent Oceania FUTSAL soccer final in Suva, jetted in yesterday to join the Navua soccer camp.

The 19-year-old, who netted seven goals in the tournament –– just two behind Golden Boot winner and his team mate Micah Lea'alafa –– will make his debut for the back-to-back Fiji FACT champions against Ba in the NewWorld National Soccer League at Thomson Park on Sunday.

"I have seen Ba play and I am just looking forward to the game," said the talented forward utility, who featured for the Solomons against teams like Russia, Brazil, Japan and Cuba in the FUTSAL World Cup Finals last year.

Navua soccer president Anil Sharma sees Wetney's signature as a major coup for the emerging giants of Fiji soccer.

"He's full of class," Sharma said.

Oceania FUTSAL guru Scott Gilligan recently described Wetney as a dribbling ace.

"Jack Wetney from the Solomon Islands can beat players with ease and also has the ability to read the game," Gilligan said.

Sharma is rubbing his hands in glee at the prospect of pairing Wetney and Fiji FACT hero James Naka upfront at the BOG in Lautoka next month.

"Naka will join us next week, which should give us enough preparation time," said the managing director of Southern Forest Fiji Limited.

Sunday's Navua-Ba ma-tch kicks-off at 3pm and Wetney is likely to play striker alongside Pita Bolaitoga.
