John BlakeJuly 25, 2009Medina residents and sisters Clarice and Jordan Taylor, playing for the U10 Central Maryland Futsal Stars, took third place in the girls U10 division at the 2009 U.S. Futsal National Tournament held on July 9-12 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore.
Futsal is a scaled-down version of outdoor soccer played indoors. Games include teams of five players and are played on a smaller field, roughly the size of a basketball court, with a smaller ball.
After placing third in the Eastern Regional Tournament, the CMF Stars, representing players from Ohio, Maryland and Virginia, went 2-1 and missed out on the championship game by two goals.
En route to the their third-place finish, the Stars defeated New Jersey state soccer champion and futsal regional champion Winslow Tygers and Maryland state champion Denison Cabrel Academy.
Their only loss was to the No. 2-ranked girls U10 soccer team, New York's Albertson Soccer Club.
Clarice, a rising sixth-grader at Claggett Middle School and member of the U11 Everest Soccer Club, was a central defensive stalwart, while Jordan, a fourth-grader at Northrop Elementary School and member of the U11 Pennine Soccer Club U11, had four assists as the youngest player in the tournament.
This was Clarice's first and Jordan's second top-three finish on the national stage. Jordan was a member of the Super F National Champion U9 boys team this past winter in Kansas City, playing for Otto Orf's OSP Legends.
