League Continues Despite Rumbles From Outside

The Indonesian Futsal League regular season finished on Tuesday after the fourth series at the Yogyakarta State University Sports Complex.

But uncertainty lingers over the Final Four, after Indonesian Football Association chief Nurdin Halid shuffled the association’s national structure last week.

Part of the restructuring included disbanding the National Futsal Body (BFN) and creating a new futsal committee, headed by Ferry Paulus, which is tasked with forming a new futsal governing organization.

BFN officials said the decision left them without the authority to run the league and put the Final Four, scheduled for Aug. 1-9 in Jakarta, at risk.

“We agreed to run the BFN until the fourth series was over, so now we will let the futsal committee decide the league’s fate,” BFN deputy chairman Yerico Umbas said on Wednesday. “We hope they will continue to run the league, or at least finish this season, because we worked hard to introduce this professional futsal league since last year.”

Ferry said the committee would meet on Aug. 7 to discuss futsal throughout the country, not just the league.

“We want to overhaul futsal development in the country by setting new regulations and blueprints,” he said.

On the pitch, Mutiara Hitam made its first season in the league a memorable one as it qualified for the Final Four.

The Papuan club finished third in the league table after beating SWAP 6-2 in its final regular-season match on Tuesday.

Mutiara players Boi Boas and Echona top the goal-scoring charts, with Boi ending the regular season with 26 goals and Echona notching 24.

Biangbola, the 2008 runner-up, secured top spot with 30 points after a 3-1 victory against Electric V-Sport. Reigning champion Electric stayed in second place with 24 points.

Pelindo II earned the final playoff berth after beating Hanggar IBM 7-4, finishing fourth with 24 points.
