Roger Williams University Web SiteRoger Williams to bring futsal to Rhode IslandBRISTOL, R.I. – Roger Williams University has partnered with New England Futsal to bring the indoor soccer game to Rhode Island. The venture will be called RWU Futsal, with clinics, competitions, and one-day tournaments over the winter break to begin this fall.
The new program will be under the direction of RWU Men’s Soccer Head Coach Jim Cook and Assistant Coach Ben Figueiredo. The training will be supervised by United States Futsal Director of Coaches Bill Sampaio.
Coach Cook is excited about the prospect of Fustal coming to Roger Williams and the East Bay area of Rhode Island.
“Futsal is at the forefront of indoor soccer play,” said Coach Cook. “It teaches the young players the basics of ball control. Area youth teams will not have to travel long distances to enjoy futsal. We are delighted to offer this program to the local towns. This will be a tremendous opportunity for everyone involved.”
Futsal differs from other types of indoor soccer in that the game is played on a hard playing surface demarcated by traditional end lines as opposed to bounding walls or boards. In addition, the ball is smaller than a regular outdoor soocer ball and has less bounce. As a result, futsal placed more emphasis on ball control and passing.
