Townsville BulletinCanning to kick for Australiaby
NATALIE PEUTAugust 17th, 2009CAMERON Canning may have started playing futsal just three years ago but he has already caught the eyes of Australian selectors.
The 13-year-old was the only Queensland player to be chosen in the Australian team after his strong performance at the national competition in Melbourne late last year.
The Queensland team lost all but one of their games at the tournament but despite the disappointing carnival, Canning still managed to impress selectors.
Canning said he that couldn't believe the news when told he'd be putting on the green-and-gold.
''I went off my head, I was really excited,'' he said.
He flew to Brisbane last Saturday for a two-day training camp, and will then enjoy several days competing in San Francisco.
The team will leave this weekend and return on September 1.
Canning said he had been told San Francisco was really beautiful.
''It has lots of nice beaches and stuff like that,'' Canning said.
''My whole family are going, it's going to be like a holiday for us.''
But it won't be a walk in the park for Canning who will need to keep his focus on futsal when he plays a number of American teams.
He said he expected the competition to be tough.
''And I don't really know anyone in the team so it will be hard work,'' Canning said.
