Bowers Bounces Back into Pro Arena

Saturday, August 22, 2009

Sean Bowers’ days of playing professional soccer are far from over.

The former MLS player and member of the U.S. Futsal National Team, who is also the coach of the Miramar College women’s soccer program, is hitting the professional pitch once again this fall for the reformed SD Sockers.

Bowers played for the Sockers from 2003 to 2006 before retiring, but like NFL player Brett Favre, Bowers is back again to dazzle the doubters. Bowers shares his memorable soccer moments and the person he most admires in this one-on-one.

XK San Diego: Who do you admire most in soccer and why?

Sean Bowers: The person I admire the most would be Ron Newman. He was such a great coach both in the old MISL and MLS. He was my coach on the old Sockers team and for three years in the MLS for the Wizards. His passion for the game is second to none. I would also like to say that his passion spilled onto his son, Guy Newman, who is such a huge fixture in the San Diego soccer community. Guy was our assistant coach for the KC Wizards and his everyday enthusiasm and passion came across to his players.

XKSD: What was a defining memory for you in your soccer career?

SB: My goal in life was always to represent my country and for 10 years I did it on the U.S. Futsal Team. Putting on a USA jersey in the 1996 and 2004 Futsal World Cups were very inspirational moments for me and 15 other guys. There is nothing like representing your country and battling against other countries to show who is the best in Futsal.

XKSD: Do you have a pre-game routine?

SB: I really don’t have any rituals other than maybe taking a nap on game day. A nap is very important and also eating a half of a sandwich. I usually can’t run well if I feel I have a lot of food in my stomach.
