Bellingen Courier Sun Three girls Futsal teams make it to national titles25/08/2009The 19 years and 16 years girls futsal teams competed at the regional futsal titles held at Sportz Central on the 11th August after qualifying in March this year.
The 19s girls started strongly with their first game against Wauchope HS. By half time it was 5-2 with goals to Sam Snow(2), Georgia Eades(2) and Jess Snow (1). Unfortunately, the girls relaxed a little in the second half scoring only one more goal to Sam. The final score 6-4. Their next game was against CHEC where they struggled to get their game flowing. Final score 1-5. Much the same in their next game where Duval seemed too good and went away winners 5-1. Their final preliminary game was against Westport HS and the result of this game determined 3rd and 4th position and who would have to face Duval in the semi final. The game was a torrid affair with the final score 3-3 and Westport holding third position on for and against. This meant the girls had to play the number 1 ranked team, Duval, in the semi-final. The girls came out firing and were unluckly not to score a number of times. Duval then came back displaying their dominance converting a couple of opportunities. However, the girls did not give up and continued to take it back to Duval. With 2 minutes to go it was 4-3 (Sam Snow 3) in Duval’s favour and despite their best efforts this remained the final score. This meant the girls only just missed making the qualification for the Australian titles. This was a great effort for a team that was made up of only two under 19 players. The rest of the team was made up of under 16 and under 14 years players.
The 16 years girls also started strongly with their first match against Wauchope who they defeated convincingly 6-2 (Maddy Tarrant 3,Kanisha Phillips-Cooke 2, Malynda Post 1).They then went on to play Westport II, where they scored an incredible 14 goals (Maggie Mills 6, Kanisha Phillips-Cooke 4, Malynda Post 2, Jemma Boswell 1 and Lauren Sale 1) and 3 goals against. The next game wasn’t so easy with Westport I . The girls started strongly but failed to capitalise on early opportunities and Westport were the first to score. The game seasawed and Maggie put in a goal for us. Westport finished strongly and put in one more more which made them the winners 2-1. This also ranked them 1 so we had to play Wauchope again in the semi-final. It was a torrid affair with Wauchope clearly keen to win. The girls starting to tire and losing some of their intensity hung on for a win thanks to a goal by Kanisha. This meant we had to play the final straight away against Westport. With tired legs the girls had lost too much intensity and Westport took the game 2-0. As runners-up the girls now qualify for the Australian titles to be held in Runnaway Bay shortly. They will join with the 16 years and 19 years boys who also qualified. What a great result for Bellingen HS.
