Boro team up with Sporting FingalFA Futsal League North Leaders, Middlesbrough Futsal Club have announced a partnership with Sporting Fingal, Irish national division team, which is set to benefit both English and Irish Futsal and the two clubs.
Futsal in Ireland is at a similar level to England and the two nations have met on the court twice in their relatively short history. Ireland came out on top in two games with a win and a draw, but both nations have made huge strides in the last 12 months.
The partnership between the Teesside club and the Dublin club will allow both teams to raise their profile abroad, while also sharing knowledge and expertise. Sporting Fingal have an experienced coach in Junior da Silva, who also coaches the Ireland national team, and it was Junior who initiated talks with Boro.
Boro chairman and manager, Damon Shaw reckons hundreds of local children are set to benefit from the link up.
“Junior is an experienced futsal coach and this link up will allow us to arrange futsal schools and tours for our junior teams and other local kids both here and in Dublin. There is also scope for exchanging players in the future as futsal grows either side of the Irish Sea, and it will present plenty of opportunities for local kids who already play futsal and those who may join in the coming season.”
Middlesbrough, who contest the national playoffs in October and Sporting Fingal who are currently top of the Irish League will also be able to use the relationship for preseason matches and international tournaments.
“Each year we hope to hold one high profile match either at Thornaby Pavilion or over in Dublin which will form part of our season preparations, while also raising some valuable funds.”
Both managers have high aspirations for their clubs and a joint effort to link up with FC Barcelona is something that excites both Shaw and Junior.
“We both have good relations already with the Spanish giants,” said the Brazilian, “and together we will try to build a solid link like the one we have between Boro and Sporting Fingal.”
“I’m looking forward to putting our combined knowledge to effect and hopefully we can both achieve success on the pitch as well.”
