Day enjoys international soccer debut

YOUNG Wauchope futsal player Shannon Day got her first taste of the international competition when she travelled to New Zealand recently.

The 15-year-old competed in Christchurch for the National Championships as part of the northern New South Wales Women's Vikings Futsal team.

In only their second appearance in the event the young team led by fellow Wauchope futsal player Hayley Dixon, played some exciting futsal in the top class tournament.

According to coach Alison Fazzolari the team put in a stellar effort with only six players making the trip compared to the larger squads of New Zealand, Queensland, Northern Queensland and Tasmania.

"The Queensland side bought over 12 players so for us to be competitive was fantastic," she said.

"We kept up with most of the sides to half-time but we couldn't match them the whole game as they just had too many fresh legs.

"But it was a great learning experience and they all improved so much over the tournament."

Young Shannon Day caught the eye of Matilda Jo Burgess who was so impressed with the diminutive player that she invited Shannon to attend her Futsal Academy in QLD later this year.

The next round of the national championships will be held in Sydney in January 2010 and the northern New South Wales squad will be boosted by a larger list and will continue to improve leading into the championships.
