First Round GamesTralee Celtic 1 got off to a great start beating Classic FC 6-1. In a tight game Tralee Celtic 2 just edged past Tralee Dynamos 3-2.
Killorglin showed their Futsal experience beating Listowel Celtic 4-3.
Second RoundTralee Celtic1 kept their good form going beating a much fancied Listowel celtic 3-2. Killorglin were too strong for Classic who went down and out of the competition with a 5-2 defeat.
Behy Rovers FC whose players have been playing in a futsal league in Glenbeigh were the wildcard team and surprise package of the competition showed some excellent passing and futsal skills to beat a highly competitive Tralee Dynamos side 5-3.
Third Round gamesThe third round would decide who topped the groups with Tralee Celtic1 just edging out Killorglin 7-7 on a better goal difference in the group games in what was to be a prelude to the final.
This was one of the best games with players getting used to the fast pace, technical skills and quick thinking. The other play off for top spot saw the much fancied Behy Rovers FC beating a strong Tralee Celtic2 side 3-2.
The first semi final saw both Tralee Celtic go head to head. In a close game Tralee Celtic1 proved just too strong beating their fellow Celtic players 6-4.
The other semi-final saw the favourites Behy Rovers FC go down to a clinical performance from Killorglin FC 3-0.
In an exhilarating final Tralee Celtic1 came from 3-1 down to clinch the cup in the dying seconds of the game with a fantastic wonder goal from Damien Locke to win 5-4. In what was a hugely entertaining
final Killorglin dominated early on and looked odds-on favourites to clinch the title. Tralee Celtic1 showed dogged determination to come back. Both teams produced some amazing football and congratulations must go to Killorglin FC who were gracious in defeat. Congratulations to Ken Robinsons team Tralee Celtic1 lifting the cup and winning Kerry’s first Senior Men’s Futsal Tournament, and the coveted title of best Futsal team in the county.
There were a few players in the running for player of the tournament, including some fine goalkeeping displays from Killorglin’s keeper Jason Foley but Tralee Celtics Fiachra Dunne deserved the honours for a magnificent display in the final and throughout the tournament.
The Listowel Sports Centre would like to thank sponsors Science in Sport for supplying the winners with nutritional packs, all the teams for playing the game in good spirit and players for conducting
themselves in a professional manner. Thanks also to the two referees, Seamus O’Mahony and Paddy Barry who officiated each game and Darren Ahern, FAI.
It was great to see players utilising the warm-up room before games. During the tournament Neuromuscular Therapist Josephine McCarthy of Santè Therapy Centre, Listowel was at hand to give players pre-event massage, functional movement assessments and consultations on any niggling injuries. As winners, Tralee Celtic are automatically entered into next years 2nd invitational to defend their title. Can they do it again?
