Solomon Star NewsKurukuru fly to Lybia todayFriday, 02 October 2009THE National Futsal Team, Kurukuru, concluded their camp at the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) Academy in Honiara before departing for Libya today.
The team will travel to Tripoli, Libya, for the Alfateh Continental Futsal Championship.
The tournament is very much like the futsal confederations cup and involves the top teams from the six FIFA confederacies including Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), which Kurukuru is representing.
Kurukuru will be up against Iran, Guatemala, Spain, Uruguay and Libya in a championship that is expected to be very tough for the island boys.
Team Manager Mapuru Tausinga said this is their only camp before heading for the championship but they are confident because they have been together for a long time.
“These boys have been playing together since they were kids so their sense of togetherness is incredible.”
Captain Elliot Ragomo added the players have given their all in training and look forward to playing in the championship.
“The spirit and the morale of players are very good.
“We are happy and ready to play in Libya,” the Kurukuru captain said.
SIFF General Secretary Eddie Ngava said the national team’s participation in the Alfateh championship is part of the preparation of the boys for the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup.
“The players in the team are very skilled already, this experience will serve to build their mental strength,” he said.
Kurukuru last participated in an international level tournament when it took part in the FIFA Futsal World Cup held in Brazil in September 2008.
In July this year, the youngsters underlined their supremacy in Oceania with a clean sweep of the 2009 OFC Championship awards including the tournament trophy.
The team will travel through Brisbane and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates in their journey to Libya.
