East Coast in bid for national glory

17 October 2009

SCARBOROUGH could make its mark on the national stage in the game of Futsal.

East Coast Futsal Club are preparing to battle it out with another four sides in the National League play-offs in Sheffield later this month.

The event, which will see the Scarborough side doing battle with Oldham Athletic, Liverpool, York University and Albert Park (Middlesbrough) will take place on October 31.

This is in preparation for the National League's kick off in January. As well as this event, East Coast will be battling it out in the Errea International Futsal Cup at the Thornaby Pavilion next week, which will see them taking on National champions Middlesbrough, as well as teams from the Ivory Coast and Uruguay.

Team manager Steve Brennan said: "We have to finish in top two to be offered a place in the league.

"We will do well considering we have been playing Futsal the least of the five teams, but it shows how far we have come to be offered a shot.

"York will be toughest test as they have played for 10 years, Oldham Athletic Futsal are part of the football club so they will be of a good standard. Liverpool & Albert Park are doing okay but this is their first year also so are a bit unknown.

"If we get off to a good start, have a strong squad on the day and work hard, we have a great chance of winning three games to get us through.

"We lack experience compared to the other four but we have a good set of lads committed to becoming better players technically and challenging themselves.

"If nothing else, we will have gained some experience for next year so we have nothing to lose."

Futsal is a similar game to five-a-side football, but is focused on skills and tactics
